Aava Mobile to unveil 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet for businesses

Aava Windows Tablet

Finnish startup Aava Mobile is believed to be showing off a Windows 8.1 tablet, sporting an 8.3-inch HD display and powered by the Intel Atom tablet processor code-named Bay Trail, at the IDF (Intel Developer Forum) next week. So what will we be looking to see in this latest product powering Microsoft’s OS?

The HD screen will feature 1920×1200 pixels and will join a growing group tablets with screens under 10 inches. The real kicker with Aava Mobile’s tablet is that it won’t be sold to consumers, but will instead be built to order for vertical markets, including health care, education and public services. That’s not to say the average consumer won’t be able to purchase one as it’s reported Aava will make the tablet available through other device makers.

No price has been revealed, but Intel has Bay Trail CPU tablets priced at between $350 and $400. The startup estimates battery life to be around 10 hours and will include features that will make the product more appealing to enterprises, which is something that will surely please Microsoft with its Windows 8 OS being packed for business to take full advantage of. As well as the 10 hours of juice, the battery is also swappable.

Find yourself low on charge? Simply get the spare out your bag. The image above shows the removable rear cover.

Docking capabilities will be supported and the device itself has been tested to withstand drops of up to 1 meter, as well as performing well in both high and low temperatures. Piotr Frasunkiewicz, co-founder of Aava Mobile, notes that while Windows 8 adoption has been poor so far in tablets and the PC world, demand will pick up.

He states that “in vertical markets, the legacy of Windows is a benefit,” explaining companies will look to upgrade to tablets that support exiting applications and deployments.

How 3 levels of locationing can dramatically change store engagement

A shopper visits a retail store armed with their mobile phone but does the retailer know, or be able to identify, or interact with them. Sound familiar? Essentially retailers are leaving customers to navigate the store, and find and pay for their items without any engagement whatsoever.

But what if the retailer could connect with the customers at multiple points throughout the store? They would be able to welcome them upon entry, suggest products and promotions relative to the aisle they’re in, and create offers personalised to their shopping history and preferences. Motorola Solutions Mpact platform for mobile marketing can do just this, and in the process, increase profits and customer satisfaction.

The 3 levels of store locationing: Presence, Zone, Position

MPact provides three tiers of locationing for customer engagement of – presence, zone, and position. With this advanced locationing capability, you will know who is in the store, how long they are in certain store sections and what type of products they’re shopping for to provide a personalized shopping journey that elevates the experience .

Detect customers as they walk through the door, or are even while they’re still in the car park. Send them a hello and personalised assistance for their store visit. By doing so, the retailer will be delivering a positive impression, even before the shopping experience has started.

Wherever customers are in-store, with locationing it possible to know exactly which area they’re in, so the retailer can send zone specific offers e.g. 20% off selected kitchenware. In bigger stores customers may not be able to find their way around. locationing can push out maps, layouts and step-by-step directions. It will save customers valuable time, make them feel supported and well assisted, and much happier with their experience as a result.

Know exactly where a customer is, even right down to item level. Using the latest Bluetooth and wireless locationing technology retailers will be able to pinpoint their precise position (down to just one metre). Send promotions to their smartphone right at the physical point of selection e.g. an e-coupon for a kettle, and provide the information where it’s needed most – right at the point of decision.

To get the mix right, it’s a good idea to have all three of these locationing tools. In doing so, retailers will be able to deliver personalisation and assistance at a highly granular level. Customers will enjoy the fact that they can receive reviews and offers precisely when they need them, not when they write or type out their shopping list, or after they’ve left the aisle undecided.

Real-time insight
Locationing doesn’t just mean better interactions with customers. It can also improve operational behaviours through analysing trends and accessing real-time heat maps that show where the store is getting busy. Retailers will then be able to allocate resources accordingly, to improve queuing and making staff available to better serve the customer, for example. It will help to reveal trends and uncover what’s working for the store in terms of merchandise, track seasonal changes, making stock purchasing and store layout decisions more accurate.

When combining location and analytics it will help gain deeper insight into individual customers, by determining their in-store activity, purchase history and preferences. All of this can be fed back to internal teams and stored in data archives for use by ‘connected staff’ or other promotional activities – depending on the stores data policies.

To ensure the most is made of locationing and analytics, integrate the data captured existing CRM and other marketing and management systems. This will drive both customer and internal satisfaction quickly, and deliver a speedier ROI.

MPact Platform for Mobile Marketing from Motorola Solutions is the first of-its-kind to offer both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® SMART technology, to engage with shoppers in aisle where buying decisions are made. The solution will allow shoppers to opt-in and receive customized offers and personal assistance via their Bluetooth SMART-trigged loyalty app. In addition access Wi-Fi to locate products in store, read reviews, compare prices and look up information.

How to maximise your return on investment: Deploy rugged rather than consumer smartphones.

Yes you guessed it; we’re wading in to the Rugged versus Consumer debate!

We are now in the era of confluence: Where consumer devices have infiltrated the traditional enterprise space.

Heavy Equipment ET1_D3X4213 (2) 4 web bannerExciting new options from Motorola Solutions such as the new TC55, MC40 and ET1 tablet combine the best of both worlds for enterprise customers. Increasingly businesses are considering consumer smartphones for outdoor and challenging environmental usage, but they do not have the durability, manageability or functionality necessary for everyday use in harsher business applications. Some popular analysts report that consumer smart phones increase TCO by up to 50% compared to rugged devices. But not all situations are the same.

Hard & Soft Costs:

Hard Costs that are written into the tender are the ones that procurement departments are most concerned with, eg. the actual hardware, platform, peripherals and software costs. Hidden costs can range from 60-70% of ongoing contract costs, such as initial and ongoing training, system maintenance and technical support, downtime, including lost manpower, lost revenue and HW replacement. The time taken to repair and replace consumer devices can roll into weeks.

Each 1% increase in device failure equates to a 5% increase in TCO.

Consumer device longevity is much shorter than durable and rugged, with smartphone platforms only lasting for a year or two.

“A non-rugged device (consumer smartphone) will have a 27% higher TCO compared to a rugged device over 4 years based on the *Platform pattern using 500 unit deployment.”

Gartner – TCO Mobile Devices 2012 Update

The Hidden Costs of Consumer Grade Devices:

Key investment recommendations:

  • Let the application and environment drive device selection
  • Don’t make accessories an afterthought
  • Prepare for the ‘hidden costs’
  • Don’t underestimate post deployment management and support costs
  • Focus on sustainable application development
  • Develop mobile talent
  • Battery management is a key requirement

TC55 poster snapshotBuilt for all day enterprise use – unlike smartphones with a 3-5 year lifecycle:

  • 1.2M drop spec (military standard rating for reliability)
  • Tumble tested – survives 300 consecutive hits in Motorola’s tumble drum
  • IP67 – (Ingress Protection) survives submersion in water for 30 minutes
  • Corning Gorilla Glass  2 display/scanner exit – prevents scratches and shattering when dropped
  • TC55 vs. Consumer Products – TCO White Paper

Environmental factors:

  • Use of device in direct sunlight
  • Use of device with a gloved hand in the rain (perfect for Utilities, Construction & Field Service)
  • Use of device in wet conditions
  • Device exposure to extreme (high/low) temperatures
  • Device exposure to extreme vibration

Motorola Solutions TC55 Video: Business Tough Even in Wet Conditions:

Consumer devices forego Enterprise core values:

  • Security Vulnerabilities – No application lockdown/White listing, User vs. IT control
  • Limited WiFi Support – Poor or no support for 5GHz (interference avoidance & system capacity). Limited security profiles, limited fast roaming.
  • Consumer Lifecycles – Regular OS and device updates, often with compatability issues and form factor changes.
  • Durability/Impact Susceptibility
  • Low audio output
  • Limited data privacy
  • No roadmap, making future planning a challenge
  • Consumer focussed
  • Battery Management – lower energy batteries to maintain slim profile, no battery replacement or swap, lifecycle and management.
  • Multi-piece Solutions – Scanning, imaging, supplemental battery
  • Multi-User – Designed for single user whereas enterprise customers often need shared devices.
  • Limited Data Collection
  • Compliance to Rgulatory Mandates
  • Theft – Purpose built devices are not generally sought out for theft
  • App Procurements

Enterprise WiFi from Motorola

There is nothing more frustrating than a slow WiFi system, especially if you have just paid for the service. A good example is some hotel conference suites. When you sign in at arrival time all is well but as the day progresses throughput crawls to snails pace and maintaining connections become very difficult.

Did you know there is a very good technical reason for this?

WiFi on the cheap may seem a good idea at the time. Deploying a “cheap” of the shelf WiFI unit and Access Point (AP) may seem adequate but just as you would not use a laptop to serve a business critical application you should not use a cheap WiFi setup to serve customers. As the load goes up with increased connections of the shelf WiFi units simply can not cope and frustration will ensue.

Motorola Solutions provides some top kit to ensure your customers stay content and get the service they deserve. The Motorola WiFi kit is almost always hidden from view. They are inside false ceilings, high on walls and behind false walls. Why is this? The units are utilitarian devices that do not feature fancy swooping shiny plastic cases with flashing lights. They look like spiders and are built to last and do the job! Take a look at the nooks and crannies of your favourite supermarket, retail shop, hospital etc etc, and you will see them!

A Motorola AP8132 “bug”

Couple the hardware with the Wing 5 software and controllers and you have a robust extensible platform that gives you control and enterprise features that other vendors simply can not match.

Motorola has a very impressive Retail Experience Centre at their offices in Basingstoke and having been there a few times I can safely say every single demonstration unit / system works properly. As an ex-IMBer I know how to fake a demo to make it look like everything works properly. Smoke and daggers training is part and parcel of being an IBM tech sales dude but I am happy report that the Motorola REC works properly.

The Motorola REC is much bigger then this picture that simply depicts the zones.

If you are interested in visiting the centre then please send us a request and we will be happy to assist.

The Brodit vehicle mount for the Motorola ET1

Selection_286 530411 Active holder with cig-plug. The Brodit 530411 is a slim design with charger integrated in the holder. It fits the ET1 unit with both with and without handstrap for ease of use. The unit can also be directly wired to car battery.

Of course there are vehicle specific dashmounts available that will suit your mobile office! If you use an active holder for your Motorola ET1 while driving and you will always have a freshly charged battery!

The holder provides a neat and comfortable installation, safe and convenient. The holder is equipped with a cigarette-plug for connection to the vehicle’s 12 Volt socket for convenience. The holder is mounted onto a tilt swivel. This mean that you can adjust the angle in order to avoid light reflection on the screen. You can easily switch between portrait and landscape mode by turning the holder into desired position.

It is easy to put the unit into place in the holder, and to take it with you when leaving the car. Tablets (Surfpads) should not be installed onto a car’s dashboard if they block the view or block key controls. ProClip (Brodit’s vehicle mounting bracket) is designed for installation of smaller devices like mobile phones and GPS devices, ProClip is not designed for large devices like tablets.

In some vehicles the ProClip has an extra firm fit and can then be used also for installation of a tablet. If you want to place a tablet onto the car’s dashboard, each combination of tablet-car must be examined in detail by you in order to determine if such an installation is possible in the specific case. Consideration should be given to the position and how firmly the ProClip is in place, as well as the size of the tablet you wish to use. Brodit will not give any recommendations for such installations.

An installation of a tablet onto a vehicle’s dashboard is always done on the customer’s own responsibility. Brodit recommends to use tablets on the car’s headrest, installed onto a Brodit headrest mount.
